Draft Protocol Spec ‎(Google Wave Federation Protocol)‎

Draft Protocol Spec ‎(Google Wave Federation Protocol)‎:

Google Wave is built on top of XMPP which is the core protocol of the Jabber Instant Messaging.

"Waves are a new medium for communication that could be described as a new form of multi-user document. Conceptually, waves do not exist themselves, instead being made up of a set of one or more wavelets which in turn contain one or more documents. A wave is visualised to participants primarily through display of its root conversation wavelet, which is discovered through convention (wavelet of ID '~conversation/root'). Users become notified of wavelets by being added as participants, ala being invited to edit and participate in a multi-user document. It is also worth noting that wavelets have create-on-use semantics, and as such, users must create a new wave by adding themselves to its (currently non-existant) root wavelet."

Google Wave Drips With Ambition. A New Communication Platform For A New Web.

Google Wave Drips With Ambition. A New Communication Platform For A New Web.

Yesterday, during the Google I/O keynote, Google’s VP of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, laid out a grand vision for the direction Google sees the web heading towards with the move to the HTML 5 standard. While we’re not there yet, all the major browser players besides Microsoft are aligned and ready for the next phase, which will include such things as the ability to run 3D games and movies in the browser without additional plug-ins. But Google wants to take it one step further with a brand new method of communication for this new era. It’s called Google Wave.

John Resig - ECMAScript 5 Strict Mode, JSON, and More

John Resig - ECMAScript 5 Strict Mode, JSON, and More: "Altogether I think ECMAScript 5 makes for an interesting package. It isn't the massive leap that ECMAScript 4 promised but it is a series of respectable improvements that reduces the number of obvious bugs while making the language safer and faster. I'm looking forward to when some implementations start to go public."

John Resig - ECMAScript 5 Objects and Properties

John Resig - ECMAScript 5 Objects and Properties: "ECMAScript 5 is on its way. Rising from the ashes of ECMAScript 4, which got scaled way back and became ECMAScript 3.1, which was then re-named ECMAScript 5 (more details)- comes a new layer of functionality built on top of our lovable ECMAScript 3.

There are a few new APIs included in the specification but the most interesting functionality comes into play in the Object/Property code. This new code gives you the ability to dramatically affect how users will be able to interact with your objects, allowing you to provide getters and setters, prevent enumeration, manipulation, or deletion, and even prevent the addition of new properties. In short: You will be able to replicate and expand upon the existing JavaScript-based APIs (such as the DOM) using nothing but JavaScript itself."

Ajaxian Digg shows Multipart XMLHttpRequest prototype

Ajaxian Digg shows Multipart XMLHttpRequest prototype: "One of the ways that high-performance websites like Yahoo suggest speeding up load times is by reducing the number of HTTP requests per page. We started thinking about what we could do to reduce HTTP overhead, and where we could get the biggest benefits from it. Well, one thing led to another and the next thing we knew we were talking about writing a generalized framework for bundling files, sending them through a single request, then separating them for use once they head down the pipe."

ongoing Database Helper

ongoing Database Helper: Tim Bray: "I’ve been in a lot of Cloud-flavored discussions recently about what kind of Platform-as-a-Service offerings might hit sweet spots. On several occasions, People Who Should Know have said things like “A huge proportion of apps, even really big apps, can coast along just fine on a single MySQL instance with help frommemcached.” Some numbers crossed my radar today that would tend to support that theory; and they’re sort of astounding.

Check out Zoran Radovic’s Scaling Memcached: 500,000+ Operations/Second with a Single-Socket UltraSPARC T2. The title kind of says it: hundreds of thousands of ops per second, and a saturated 10G Ethernet link, with a 1U single-socket server. Now, benchmarks aren’t reality, but them are still some mind-boggling numbers.

Our Shanti Subramanyam has been mining the same territory with the new Nehalem boxes; see Memcached Performance on Sun's Nehalem System and Multi-instance memcached performance. And there were some even scarier numbers being bandied about on an internal email list; stay tuned.

But still, at the end of the day, that throughput on a single-socket box is the real news story, to my eye."

Unnecessary scrollbars appear in designMode iframe in IE8: "In standards mode in the IE8 final (8.0.6001.18702), if you turn designMode ON in an iframe with scrolling set to auto, regardless of how little text appears, unnecessary scrollbars are presented. If you turn designMode off, the scrollbars disappear."

GPS system 'close to breakdown' | Technology | guardian.co.uk: "It has become one of the staples of modern, hi-tech life: using satellite navigation tools built into your car or mobile phone to find your way from A to B. But experts have warned that the system may be close to breakdown."

"US government officials are concerned that the quality of the Global Positioning System (GPS) could begin to deteriorate as early as next year, resulting in regular blackouts and failures – or even dishing out inaccurate directions to millions of people worldwide."

The Dam Just Broke: Facebook Opens Up to OpenID - ReadWriteWeb

In a few minutes Facebook will become the biggest example of a social network that allows users to log-in with OpenID credentials granted to them by other companies' websites. Major networks have said for months that their ID could be used as OpenID, but becoming "relying parties" that accepted OpenID from elsewhere was the step everyone was waiting for. The dam has broken.

It's ironic that it's Facebook that did it. Facebook is probably the most closed of all the major social networks (other than LinkedIn) and is so far ahead of everyone else in market share that traditional logic would argue that they have no interest in this kind of interoperability. This is the kind of step that was expected from networks more open and, frankly, far behind Facebook. Nevertheless, it has happened and it's big news.

New Facebook users will now be able to create Facebook accounts using their Gmail credentials and existing users will be able to associate and thus log in with Gmail or any other OpenID account that supports "automatic login."

Time and Space Tradeoffs in Version Control Storage

Time and Space Tradeoffs in Version Control Storage: "Storage is one of the most difficult challenges for a version control system. For every file, we must store every version that has ever existed. The logical size of a version control repository never shrinks. It just keeps growing and growing, and every old version needs to remain available.

So, what is the best way to store every version of everything?"

Google Custom Search: Enabling Rich Snippets in Custom Search

Google Custom Search: Enabling Rich Snippets in Custom Search

Today, we announced Rich Snippets for Google web search, a new presentation of snippets that highlight structured data embedded in web pages. Rich Snippets provide summary information, including important page-specific attributes, to help you quickly identify the relevance of your results. Experiments on Google have shown that people find this additional data valuable -- if they see useful and relevant information from a webpage, they are more likely to click through to it. Our web search team is currently experimenting with a limited set of attributes for reviews and user profiles that webmasters can provide through in-line markup in their web pages by using open standards such as microformats or RDFa.

Since Custom Search sits on top of the Google web search platform, we're enabling Rich Snippets for custom search engines too. In fact, Custom Search provides support for richersnippets; you can define your own custom attributes that we'll index and return with your custom search results. In addition to microformats and RDFa, you can also provide custom metadata within your web pages via special markup called page maps. A page map identifies specific attributes that are recognized and preserved by Google at index time, and returned along with search results for presentation.

So, if you're using Custom Search or Site Search on your website, you can now control further how your content appears in search results. You can showcase key information -- such as image thumbnails, summaries, ratings, and prices -- in your result snippets if you provide the appropriate markup on your pages. As in the example shown below, displaying specific attributes can make the snippet more useful for shoppers.
